Personality:
Apollo is an enthusiastic, sarcastic, good-natured young man. He has a dedicated work ethic and is so enthusiastic about his job that he spends his off time practicing his objection (and thus working his so-called "Chords of Steel"). During his first case, he worried about his performance, hoping he would make a good first impression, especially as it was a murder case. During his early days at the "Anything Agency", he does as Phoenix asks even when he states there will be no payment; he looks for the man who hit him with a car. When an investigation starts to digress, his worry is evident in his thoughts and his reluctance to join what was steering his endeavors out of line in the first place.
In court, Apollo knows where he stands and is aware of his duty: to give his client the not guilty verdict they deserve. He is very serious when it comes to work; when his opponent in court, Klavier Gavin, treats their trials as a sort of performance and imitates playing a guitar in court, Apollo finds it very superfluous and thinks of it as Klavier being a 'diva'. But he doesn't think of Klavier as a rival. It is also shown later that Klavier doesn't either, and their mutual thoughts on the matter is that they have to work together in order to get the truth out. His opinions are not without bias, though; he usually believes his clients are innocent and doesn't leave a lot of room for doubt, a result of his rookie naivete. But his goal is always sound-- and that goal is to find the truth. And it's this goal that solidifies his work ethic, his dedication to investigating, and perseverance, getting up even when he falls.
During the game, Apollo's inner thoughts can be read in parentheses. He can be rather blunt and critical, and a good chunk of his dialogue is contained within these unheard notes. It reflects his thought process - while he tends to bumble in court, he's got a sharp mind and is observant. And while he is a critical thinker, his inexperience still catches up to him. His opposite in court sometimes feels the need to lay out clues to Apollo, and when Apollo realizes this, he resents the idea of being helped along like a kid, like a rookie, but he doesn't refuse the help, either. Apollo is confident enough in himself to trust his mind, but he knows when he needs to step down and accept help.
While most of his snarky remarks stay in his head, he can be sarcastic to people up front, especially to Phoenix and Trucy. When he's tired or irritated he has no problem in letting this side of him out, but his well-practiced manners usually keep him in check. When he's willing to be sarcastic openly with someone, it's usually because he trusts them, or is responding to some provoking. Since Apollo spends so much time with Trucy, he eventually allows himself to be more open with her, making quips when she points out the obvious or other unnecessary observations.
Normally he's polite and generally kind, but his inner thoughts show the opinions he is too nice to share. He can be both genuinely kind and mean to people, yet he normally chooses to be cordial. He sympathizes with people, showing he is compassionate, but with different people come different opinions. His wavering opinion of Klavier is a good example of this; he thinks of Klavier as a 'glimmerous fop', as Ema likes to put it, when Klavier is being melodramatic, but he can also be condoling when Klavier shows his more human side. For example, when Klavier is affected in court by his brother's presence, Apollo notices and feels bad for him.
Apollo has a good heart, and when he believes in something, he's not afraid to put that heart entirely into what he does and thinks. In the fourth and final case of his game, Apollo is determined to get the defendant's not guilty verdict before she dies and the opportunity to try her is gone. Despite the lack of hard evidence, he sets a goal that is close to impossible and puts everything he has into it. He gets burned occasionally, but he doesn't give up once he's committed himself to it.
Easily flustered, Apollo always tries to make a good impression. He always tries to please, but he knows when he's going nowhere. His strong sense of belief and the way he puts so much of himself on the line contributes to this; because he's so intensely involved in everything he does, when things come to a sudden halt it's so abrupt, it throws him off-kilter, making him sputter in response. He needs time for his heart and brain to catch up to reality after he focusing so ardently.
In the beginning of the game, Apollo was very easily flustered by the idea of handling cases on his own. After all, his first case was a murder case. It didn't help that his mentor was the guilty party of his first case. He had to learn how to cope quickly, and throughout the game, it shows. He is more equipped to investigate, handle witnesses, and use the Perceive system as time goes on. His belief in finding the truth becomes stronger, especially in the last case when he has almost no evidence to help him. All of his evidence relates to incidents in the past, and while it would be more difficult to use it that way, he didn't give up. Apollo learned to accept things more easily, what with his unusual rival and sidekick, and the odd characters that seemed to follow them. His employer, Phoenix Wright, helped change his views as well. At the start of the game, it's obvious Apollo knows Phoenix and what he used to be and is disappointed that the legendary defense attorney had fallen so low. But he catches up with him later, after the case, and eventually joins Phoenix and Trucy's "Anything Agency". Phoenix then coaches him, helping Apollo form a belief in the truth that is almost, if not just, as strong as Phoenix's. Both Trucy and Klavier remind Apollo how young he is, inside and out of court, but they both offer him support as well. All of these influences, Phoenix, Klavier, and Trucy, helped him cope with the responsibility of his new career and helped him to become the more mature, calm, and prepared defense attorney he is at the end of the game.
All in all, Apollo is a spirited man with a dry sense of humor. He has loyalty and heart to last a life time, and the Chords of Steel to prove it.
Abilities:
Apollo has the ability to pick up on people's nervous habits through the use of the "Perceive System", which is activated by the chunky bracelet on his left wrist - it tightens when people become nervous. With this ability, the little tics of people under pressure become more obvious, giving Apollo the opportunity to press his witness further at the right moment. In general, this ability makes Apollo more aware of other people's nervous reactions.
Otherwise, Apollo is an ordinary human being with average attributes.
Sample Entry:
With a yawn, Apollo puts down his pen and takes a look around the office. Moonlight filters through through the window, illuminating several of the miscellaneous objects that litter the Anything Agency.
Writing up court files is anything but "fun", but it's a necessary evil that only he'll really get around to. Even if he does work for Wright, the man is much too elusive and wishy washy for paper work. Does he mind? He's not sure. For the most part, probably, but he's not really sure what he'd be doing otherwise... Maybe finally managing to get a decent night's sleep. But those are for nights when he doesn't have work.
With a glance to the clock, he determines that it's much later than he would have guessed. Just after eleven pm... geez. All of this going over case files. But at least he's made some progress, and that's the best he can ask for.
It's funny when he thinks about it. Working through school, then later as Kristoph's apprentice, only to somehow find his way into the retired Wright and co. Law Office to stay up into late hours of the night doing paper work. The past months have definitely put some of his naive, rookie fantasies to rest, and it'd make him feel jaded if it weren't for the fact that he's actually... content.
Content to have the great Phoenix Wright as his mentor, even in his current state. Content to have met a friend like Trucy. Content to have found an opposite in court who's in it for the truth, for justice, just like he is. Content to have made it so far in his career without any major screw ups.
For all his previous worrying, he's actually off pretty well. Apollo smiles to himself as he organizes his work into a folder. Look at him, getting all sentimental. Must be the quiet of the night letting his mind wander. At least he's not talking to himself. Not that he hasn't done that before, but the chances of him being walked in on are much higher in this shared space than at home, so he's thankful.
He tucks the folder into his suitcase and heads towards the door. The next time he's in here, he probably won't be alone. Trucy will probably be there to greet him with her usual smile, maybe even with a new surprise from Mr. Hat. Hopefully nothing dangerous or too ridiculous. Or maybe Mr. Wright will drop by, and maybe then they could all get noodles...
Still smiling to himself, he locks up and makes his way towards the bus station, as it's too late to ride his bike, especially in the dark. Yeah, he's content with this, and it's very welcome and pleasant surprise.
